This art studio and family home was originally built by lumber baron Charles Axel Smith. Eco sustainability was a key requirement for both owner and architect, In addition to using recycled and salvaged material from the home, such as interior trim and the original attic trusses (left exposed and the space designed around them), energy efficient strategies were employed. These techniques included highly efficient spray/foam installation, radiant/hydronic heating and installation of LED lighting throughout the home. The outdoor tub, built within an interior courtyard garden with natural light and planting was converted from an all-concrete basement. The property has been featured in various design publications. In addition to being selected as "Home of the Month" it was included in the East Bay Living Home Tours of 2018.

This 1925 home, constructed by a prominent Piedmont builder and designed by renowned San Francisco architect of the time, Louis M. Upton, survived a series of poorly planned remodels over the years. The 3-story home was fully remodeled to present day standards of a light-filled family home while retaining and enhancing the original spirit of the property. A fully redesigned kitchen and study are key features of this modern family-style home. Updated plumbing and heating, LED up-lighting combined with extensive ambient light, a new front entryway with gate system and expansion of the outdoor areas were undertaken for greater energy efficiency and maximum integration of outdoor space with the open interior floor plan.

A classic North-Berkeley craftsman home stripped to the frame for a seismic upgrade was completely restored both inside and out. New windows, doors, casework, tile, fixtures and trim seamlessly combine with the existing architectural features. Incorporated into this classic design are natural finishes, recycled materials and a number of green-friendly elements.
Given the house’s historic style, decisions had to be based on what the original builders might do with materials available today. The owners wanted to stay true to the heritage of the house. The entire design/build team felt a responsibility to observe this top priority. We wanted to be part of the homes' history and helped to maintain its original character for another 100 years.

Renovation of kitchen, study and additional half-bath. The owners of this one-time classic east bay property updated their home for the 21st century, but wished to pay homage to the retro style of the original architecture, fixtures and vintage elements. In addition to plumbing and electrical repairs required for current code compliance, the kitchen was rebuilt maintaining the warmth and charm of the original, and a modern half-bath was newly constructed. The kitchen remodel included a new countertop surface and shelves, cabinets, a new tile backsplash and painting of trim, doors and casework. New hardwood flooring was installed in the kitchen, existing floors and stairs refinished throughout the home, and carpentry work performed to repair doors, windows and walls as needed. The existing bathroom sink and tub were refinished to home-owner requirements.
